Roosevelt Redevelopment Project, 2016

With the building of a light rail station, Seattle’s Roosevelt District is undergoing conversion of a single-family and small business neighborhood into blocks of high-rise apartments.  This photographic project (2016) looks at the last vestiges of businesses and homes overtaken by decay, neglect, and squatters and at the overgrowth of their once carefully tended gardens as buildings await demolition.  Some homes are hold outs against development, representing contested spaces in this four-block area of Seattle’s Roosevelt neighborhood.  The light rail station is scheduled to open in 2021.  I look beyond chain-link fencing at the remains of once vibrant homes and businesses in this transitional urban space.
